Intro
After a few weeks off the air I return with a doozy, coming off a twelve-hour shift and four hours of sleep. A couple of good friends were tuned in, so much of the setlist is geared towards their tastes. The autumn air of the last two weeks has me in full folk-mode, and despite the 77 and sunny atmosphere we were doing it appalachian-style, whether you like it or not.
Setlist:
Kimochi Warui (When? When? When? When? When? When? When?)— Car Seat Headrest
Spring (Among The Living)— My Morning Jacket
Vampire Empire— Big Thief
My god it’s great to see this band continue to evolve. Adrienne’s vocals on this song are legendary, and my excitement for the new album is hard to quell.
Holiday Flight— Art Pepper
Do yourself a favor and read Terry Castle’s essay on Art Pepper.
Angelina— Pinegrove
Our Song— Radiator Hospital
It Rains On Me— Chuck E Weiss
A rec from my homie Cass in Pasadena. She gets credit for three or four of today’s selections.
Jazz On The Autobahn— Felice Brothers
Sea Horse— Devendra Banhart
Red Eyes— John R. Miller
Will be playing a very notable show in Thomas, WV on November 10th. November’s show to be at, without a doubt.
Both Mode— Lomelda
Wonder— Lomelda
Stonecutters— Dope Lemon
Drifter’s Wife— J.J. Cale
Yesterday’s World— Circulatory System
Junebug Waltz— Hurray For The Riff Raff
Warning— Acre Memos
This is my first week really diving into Lomelda, and I didn’t realize that she was featured on this track, a long-time favorite of mine, until after the show.
[untitled]— Neutral Milk Hotel
Jorge Regula— The Moldy Peaches
This is what music should be.
Blue Ridge Mountain— Hurray For The Riff Raff
Beautiful Friend— The Deslondes
This will forever be the week I learned about Sundown Songs, the very influential outfit at the center of the Nola country scene in the late aughts. They made four records, only one of which has found its way online. The rest exist only in CD form, and you either have a CD, or you’ve never heard it. This is my desperate plea for anyone with Louisiana connections to help me track down these CDs.
Crosswinds— J. Tillman
Oof this one was dark.
Pasadena— La Femme
Clean Elvis— Dan Reeder
Jim Song— Dr. Dog
Boogie Shoes— Tokyo Lucky Hole
Had to pick it up since Scotty Johnson of the legendary Beer Fram Radio Hour entered the studio, and he’s been known to call out my depressive bullshit from time to time.
Voyeur— Long Lost Somethins
The WV music scene lost a serious talent, Jake Wheeler, this week. This band is pretty central to the Huntington music world, and had a huge year of festivals and staple-shows. I’m not the best one to eulogize Jake, but please check out his music. You won’t regret it.
Too Close For Comfort— Art Pepper
Hawkspit— Rock Beams
Rock Beams joined me in the studio for the last half-hour and suffered through some of my low-tempo folk bullshit before this banger of a final half-hour.
Let The Sunshine In— Jimetta Rose
I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City— Harry Nilsson
It Should Have Been Me— Yvonne Fair
