MCRH 9/4: Loose Morals on a Lazy Labor Day
playlist + notes from my 9/4/23 broadcast
Theoretically most of today’s listeners are sitting at home or are outdoors grilling (Labor Day is a grill holiday, right?). There are probably 3,000 fewer listeners than an average Monday which is their loss because I became a huge fan of two new artists this week, Sofia Isella and DOPE LEMON. Also found some Silver Jews tracks I hadn’t heard before. Started this one out high energy but was just in a droning, thoughtful zone so we got into the slacker-rock a little quicker than usual. Fun show, Scott McMillan of Static Fur came in with our new Mahogany table half-way through and I got a pretty hearty laugh out of Mya and Brad when I told Rob over the air that I locked the key in the bathroom.
Setlist:
Cold Blooded Old Times— Smog
Those Were The Days— All In The Family Cast
Not sure how this ended up in my folder but I needed to fill 60-seconds and it seemed like a funny way to kick off the Labor Day broadcast.
Top of the Hour — 4pm
Chiquita Banana
Well Thought Out Twinkles— Silversun Pickups
Stuck in my head for weeks now. An Incredible song. They only debuted in 2006… I seriously figured Lazy Eye was thirty years old.
Rest My Chemistry— Interpol
Generic and yet somehow insanely popular band.
Stonecutters— DOPE LEMON
Debut for me but not for WTSQ. When I first heard this I thought it was Kurt Vile then realized it was way more interesting. Probably gonna be my top-played for the month.
Everybody Supports Women— Sofia Isella
Another debut for me. 18 year-old classically trained violinist from the UK with four or five songs out, absolute power-house vocals and brutally talented as a lyricist. Didn’t love the audio quality on the track I found and want to try again next week.
Song With No Words (Tree Without Leaves)— David Crosby
Gosh— Jamie XX
I Have Been Floated— The Olivia Tremor Control
Is that Jeff Mangum on the singing saw?
Suffering Jukebox— Silver Jews
America— Courtney Marie Andrews ft. Liz Cooper
Played for Labor Day. I’m a huge fan of these artists, but this song didn’t really do it for me. This was the low-point of the cast, unfortunately.
Bored In The U.S.A. — Father John Misty
Worker’s anthem
Top of the Hour— 5pm
Cheeseburger In Paradise— Jimmy Buffet
I started making fun of Jimmy Buffet and immediately realized how alienating and dumb that was, so made a last-second lunge for the keyboard and threw this one on and, honestly, it fuckin slaps. I cut it off after one minute.
Memory— Deerhunter
Chaos Space Marine— Black Country, New Road
So Says I— The Shins
Better Days— Graham Nash
Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)— James
Daniel drinks his weight, drank like Richard Burton, danced like John Travolta.
All My Friends— LCD Soundsystem
All Of Human Knowledge Made Us Dumb— Sofia Isella
Home Soon— Dope Lemon
Radio, Radio— Elvis Costello
Apparently got him banned from SNL for ten years, but the clip looks so staged it’s hard for me to buy.
Punks In The Beerlight— Silver Jews
Misato— Shiro Sagisu
Freebird II— Parquet Courts
Thanks for tuning in! I’ll be back Sunday at 4pm with Andrew Adkins, and of course every Monday from 4-6.
